Embrace the December Spirit
December is a magical month, but for those with birthdays during this festive time, it can often feel overshadowed by all the Christmas cheer. The tricky thing about December birthdays is they tend to get steamrolled by holiday parties, shopping, and all things merry. But fear not! There are plenty of fun ways to celebrate a December birthday that stand out against the backdrop of the holiday hustle and bustle.
Cookie Decorating Party with Hot Cocoa Bar
We love to make a December birthday special is to host a cookie decorating party. A good friend of mine used to do this annually with family, and when she moved to LA she started the tradition with her friends. In our twenties we'd do this while drinking mimosas and the cookies turned out pretty random in a good way. We made a Flava Flav cookie, mermaid cookies, cookies that looked like our boyfriends. It was a fun sugar-filled brunch where we gabbed and never really picked-up our phones because our hands were always sticky with frosting. Perhaps this is why we were able to create so many unforgettable memories at these parties.
We replicated this party (sans mimosas) for our daughter's 15th birthday party, proof that the party is a hit for all age ranges. The girls arrived in their pajamas and we handed them fuzzy socks as party favors since we are a shoes off household. In lieu of mimosas, we created an insane hot chocolate bar with marshmallows of all sizes, and sugar crystal stirs, whipped cream, peppermint sticks, crushed candy canes, cinnamon sticks, and a selection of sprinkles.
This party does require some advance prep like baking a few batches of sugar cookies in advance. If you are a procrastinator (no judgement), you can buy pre-made cookies from your favorite bakery. The key to opening up full cookie creativity is buying an array of decorating options. Forget traditional wreaths and snowmen, and think broader! Gather an assortment of icings in vibrant colors along with sprinkles of all kinds. You can even include edible glitter to add that extra sparkle for the birthday celebration. By creating a palette that includes pinks, blues, and bold reds, guests can let their imaginations run wild. Encourage creativity by using cookie cutters in fun shapes – stars, trees, or dinosaurs. The possibilities are endless, making every cookie unique and special.
Keep Your Eye on the Prize
To keep things spicy, incorporate a friendly competition by awarding prizes for the best-decorated cookies in various categories like best pop culture cookie, most lifelike cookie, the categories are endless. It adds an element of fun and a touch of humor to the event, and everyone can enjoy their cookie creations at the end.
As you embrace the holiday spirit, remember that a December birthday doesn’t have to be overshadowed. With an awesome cookie decorating party and a cozy hot cocoa bar, you can craft an unforgettable birthday celebration that feels festive and personal!
